Galveston may be better known as a summer destination, but locals will argue that there’s no better place in Southeast Texas to get into the holiday spirit than our historic, festive island. Here are four of Soar’s favorite things about our winter wonderland.

  • Dickens on The Strand Historic downtown Galveston is transformed into the Victorian-era London of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol for Dickens on The Strand, Nov. 30 – Dec. 2, 2018. Complete with live entertainment, merry food and beverages, festive parades, and unique shopping, this family-friendly event is a must-do on the island.
  • Holiday With the Cranes Where else can you revel in the season with majestic sandhill cranes? Each winter, Galveston is graced with the presence of these striking 4-foot-tall birds. Holiday With the Cranes, Dec. 8 – 9, 2018, is a weekend full of indoor and outdoor nature activities to celebrate the species and the season.
  • Festive Exhibits & Sights There’s no shortage of spectacular sights during the holiday season on Galveston Island. Downtown Lanterns & Lights provides a magical experience as the historic district is illuminated. The seasonal events at Moody Gardens include a mile-long trail of more than a million lights, an outdoor ice-skating rink, snow tubing down the Arctic Ice Slide, and a grand ice sculpture exhibit.
  • The Area’s Only Indoor Waterpark If warm-weather activities are more your thing, take a break from the winter and enjoy Holiday Splash weekends and select holidays at Schlitterbahn, where the water will be heated and the festivities will include a snow globe float and surfing Santas.
